When deciding to frame and display a football shirt, there is no single solution that works for every situation. Before choosing a frame, several options need to be considered in order to find the right balance between aesthetics, final size, cost and conservation.

There Is No Single Way to Frame a Football Shirt

Some people want to minimise the overall size, perhaps because they have many shirts to display and limited wall space.
Others prefer to display the entire shirt, keeping all its details visible and adding personalised elements such as mount boards, descriptive plaques, photographs, logos or other details.
The value and history of the shirt can also have a major influence on the choice. A collectible shirt, a signed shirt or a shirt connected to a particular event may require a different framing solution.
The first thing to understand is therefore that every choice involves a compromise.
There is no single solution that can simultaneously display the entire shirt, show both sides, provide the highest possible level of conservation, minimise the overall size and keep the cost low.
Good framing is about finding the right balance for the individual shirt and for the person who will display it.
Choosing the Right Frame Size
The final dimensions are one of the factors that most influence the choice.
A shirt can be displayed almost completely open, creating a highly dramatic presentation, or folded inside the frame to significantly reduce the overall size.
This difference can be particularly important for collectors.
A more compact solution makes better use of available wall space and, in many cases, can also help keep the cost of the frame under control.
The choice therefore depends not only on the size of the shirt, but also on how you want it to be displayed.
Full-Shirt Framing with a Floating Effect
One of the solutions most frequently requested at our workshop allows the entire shirt to remain visible, creating a distinctive floating effect.
The shirt is mounted on a custom-made internal shape and secured with stainless steel pins. This system allows us to achieve precise tension while keeping the sleeves and other parts of the shirt in a natural position.
The result is highly striking and allows the shirt to be appreciated in its entirety.
It is a solution particularly suited to situations where the priority is to maximise the visual impact of the shirt.
What Are the Compromises?
This solution also involves some considerations.
Pin mounting offers a good balance between stability, aesthetics and the possibility of removing the shirt, but it is not necessarily the most conservative choice for a shirt of particularly high historical or collectible value.
A fully open shirt also requires a large frame. Custom solutions can become quite substantial in size and, for this reason, collection from our workshop is generally recommended.
This type of framing is not designed for DIY assembly: the construction and mounting are carried out directly in our workshop.
The floating effect and the natural positioning of the sleeves are solutions that we have developed and refined over time through experimentation and work on numerous customised projects.
This type of work also requires considerable time and manual craftsmanship and therefore has a higher cost than more compact framing solutions.
Sport Frame Solutions
A completely different approach is represented by our Sport Frame range, developed in response to a specific practical need.
Over the years, we received an increasing number of enquiries from customers located far from our workshop: collectors and enthusiasts throughout Italy and in different countries who wanted one of our framing solutions but could not personally bring their shirt to us.
Sending a shirt back and forth also involves a risk that we have always wanted to avoid: entrusting a personal item, often with considerable sentimental value, to a courier.
We therefore developed a system that allows customers to frame their own shirt at home, without having to send the shirt to our workshop.
The internal shape and clip fastening system have been designed to make assembly simple, achieve good fabric tension and provide a visual result that comes close to professional framing.
A patent application for the system has been filed.
The Compromise of a Folded Shirt
The main difference compared with full-shirt framing is clear: the shirt is displayed in a more compact format.
But what may initially appear to be a limitation can actually become an advantage.
Reducing the overall dimensions makes it possible to:
- use less wall space;
- organise a collection more easily;
- keep costs under control;
- make shipping easier;
- assemble the frame independently.
The system is also designed to maintain good fabric tension and allow the shirt to be mounted reversibly.
For many collectors, the compact format therefore offers a particularly interesting balance between aesthetics, practicality, conservation and cost.
Sport Frame is available in several models, differing in size and aesthetic characteristics.
The popularity of these solutions has also allowed us to reach a much wider audience through social media: one of our demonstration videos featuring the system has reached millions of views.
When Is It Important to Show the Back of the Shirt?
Normally, a football shirt is framed with the back visible, displaying the player’s name and number.
But this is not always the best choice.
A signature, dedication, particular sponsor or other significant detail on the front can make the decision more complicated.
In these situations, we study different solutions, including configurations that allow both the front and back of the shirt to be seen.
In certain cases, a structure with two transparent surfaces can be used, while other projects are developed directly in our workshop according to the shirt and the desired result.
Again, there is no universal solution: the first step is to understand what is important to display and what level of protection and reversibility is required.
Customising a Frame for a Football Shirt
A frame can be much more than a simple container.
Adding descriptive plaques, photographs, logos, dates or other elements can help tell the story behind the shirt and make the final presentation even more personal.
The possibilities increase when the project is designed and produced directly in our workshop.
For this type of work, we also use a Valiani Nexus Edge cutting plotter, which allows us to produce internal shapes and mount boards with precision and develop customised solutions that would be difficult to achieve using standard processes.

If the shirt is particularly valuable or signed, the fastening system and level of reversibility should be considered more carefully.
If you want to display both the front and back, a specific framing solution will need to be designed.
