Framing a Papyrus with a Floating Effect: A Practical Example<\/h1>

The floating effect is a technique often used when framing drawings and works on paper. It is normally achieved by placing spacers beneath the artwork, creating a gap between the sheet and the backing. Light entering this space creates a shadow around the edges, adding depth to the composition.<\/p>

With a material such as papyrus, however, this technique is not so easy to apply.<\/p>

A solution designed for papyrus<\/h2>

Papyrus has very particular characteristics: its structure and natural tendency to curl and deform<\/strong> make it difficult to keep it raised from the backing using simple spacers.<\/p>

To overcome this problem, we used a solution based on double glazing<\/strong>.<\/p>

The papyrus is placed between two sheets of glass and held securely in position. The whole assembly is then set away from the backing using spacers<\/strong>.<\/p>

This allows the papyrus to remain separated from the backing without having to place spacers directly underneath the material, while keeping it stable and precisely positioned.<\/p>

The role of the mat board<\/h2>

Behind the second sheet of glass, we added a mat board backing<\/strong>, which allows the final appearance to be carefully controlled.<\/p>

The choice of backing and the distance between it and the papyrus help determine the visibility of the shadow and the contrast around the artwork. The mat board therefore becomes an integral part of the design, as well as providing a clean, uniform surface against which the depth can be perceived.<\/p>

Keeping the entire papyrus visible<\/h2>

One of the most interesting aspects of this solution is the possibility of leaving the entire papyrus visible<\/strong>, without using a traditional mat to cover its edges.<\/p>

Its natural characteristics become part of the composition.<\/p>

The irregular shape<\/strong>, uneven edges and small imperfections are not hidden, but highlighted. The original outline of the papyrus therefore becomes an aesthetic feature, further emphasized by the space and shadow surrounding it.<\/p>

A white frame for a clean result<\/h2>

For this project, we chose a white box frame with a tray-style backing<\/strong>, keeping the entire composition in white.<\/p>

The light-coloured backing helps enhance the projected shadow and makes the distance between the papyrus and the surface behind it immediately visible.<\/p>

The result is modern, clean and understated<\/strong>: the frame remains discreet, while the papyrus retains all of its natural irregularity and takes on an almost three-dimensional presence.<\/p>

In this case, the characteristics of the material that would normally make framing more challenging become part of the design. The double-glass construction is not simply a technical solution, but a way of turning the natural shape of the papyrus into a central element of the composition.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
